St Lucia – Jan 2013

8 01 2013

An unbelievable trip to St Lucia this year, the weather was good but the sea was not playing the game with the local rivers down in full flood pouring the muddy water into the sea which resulted in poor fishing conditions, however I did manage a new species to my list – The Sea Barble – as per images in slideshow. This is a beautiful part of the world with amazing wildlife and breath taking scenery.

Got on the road early on the morning of the 16th of November, an overcast and cool day was soon left behind to a sunny and warm afternoon as we climbed Oliphants Pass into the Freestate, passing Sterkfontein Dam and into the Golden Gates Reserve. The road snakes its way through the valley with the beautiful rock formations on each side, as the sun was was setting in the west the eastern rock face looked like molten gold. Shortly after passing through the reserve we arrived at our destination called Kiara Lodge. Booked in and made a quick braai and a few beers and then it was bed time.

Woke up early with the most amazing view on the mountains. Had a hearty breakfast had headed off to the nearest town called Clarens. Most of the day was spent on the road driving around the beautiful freestate towns and roads. Got back to the lodge at about 3pm and didn’t waste any time to head down to the bass dam located on the property. The first cast yielded a bass and then the second cast a second bass, granted they were small but even the small ones put up a decent fight. The rest of the afternoon was spent fishing surrounded by the beautiful surroundings.

Sunday arrived all too soon and after another hearty breakfast we packed our bags and climbed back into the car and headed back to Durban. All in all a beautiful weekend away in the Eastern Freestate. I can recommend that if you get a chance you visit this area.
